Today’s Cool Thing – The Whispering Vault RPG

TODAY’S COOL THING: THE WHISPERING VAULT

The Whispering Vault RPG is a game about monsters that hunt other monsters so that the cosmos doesn’t defile itself.

The Whispering Vault really isn’t like anything else I’ve read or played. The game’s premise is super ambitious but is executed in such an elegant, playable fashion that it’s really accessible after a reading of the core book. It’s also very episodic and the duties of the GM are supposed to rotate a bit so that every player gets to experience a different angle of the strange, dark story.

The players take on the role of Stalkers. Stalkers are ascended humans who during their lives made contact with the supernatural and fought for the protection of humankind. At some point (likely close to death) they are made an offer to join the ranks of a cosmic order that takes that hunt to the next level. The character’s being is forged into Five Keys that define their humanity and provide some other cool stuff in the game.

Stalkers sound pretty badass. They have to be. They hunt the Unbidden.

What are the Unbidden? The Unbidden were once members of the Aesthetic choir of forces that dream the World of Flesh into being. They are sort of like a continuum of consciousness that willfully project the Platonic forms into manifestation in our world. They are tasked only to dream – the rules prohibit them from ever having direct contact with the world they have dreamed. Unfortunately, like most crazy artists, they have some trouble with the rules and a fair number of these beings fall in love with their creations. When they leave their post to join their creations, two things happen. The Essence World and the Flesh World blend in a corrupt disaster causing some pretty substantial horror (reminded me of some of the stuff The Jaff in Barker’s “The Great and Secret Show” manages) AND they leave a hole in the cosmic engine where they once served.

Stalkers hunt the Unbidden and toss them back into the Whispering Vault for the good of the Universe.
