TODAY’S COOL THING – STAR WARS ARMADA
It’s one of the most iconic movie opening scenes of all time. First we see a desert planet with two moons, far below, then a red-and-white starship barrels onto the screen, shooting furiously at something behind it. Brilliant fire sparkles around the ship as it clearly flees from…something.
Then that huge, white-grey wedge follows it onto the screen. The huge vessel radiates power and menace. It’s quite clear that the smaller vessel is immensely overmatched and doomed.
This is the opening scene of Star Wars: A New Hope, and it’s the very first thing anyone saw of Star Wars: a battle between two capital ships. But there has been a notable lack of Star Wars games that could do that on the market…but soon that will be corrected.
To say I’m super stoked about FFG’s Star Wars: Armada would be an understatement. I’ve always wanted to have my own Star Destroyer, and soon I will! And the game system looks simple and intuitive, yet highly tactical. Smaller ships are more agile and reactive, but can’t compete with the sheer power of the Star Destroyers and Assault Frigates. Starfighter squadrons look like they will have their place too, zooming between the big ships – just like in the Battle of Endor in The Return of the Jedi.
It’s going to be very different from the X-Wing Miniatures Game; no evade dice, more emphasis on planning ahead, less on flashy maneuvers – capital ships are lumbering beasts! It’s a very distinct game from its smaller-scale relative.
So yes, I’m looking forward to Armada. And crushing you puny Rebels from the bridge of my Star Destroyer.
