Greetings miniature fans! Welcome to what will hopefully be the regular appearance of the From the Forge series of articles dealing with all things Miniature! For our first installment, we are looking at Frostgrave and the forthcoming campaign for this great game we will be running here at the store.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with Frostgrave, it is the spiritual successor to games like Mordheim – you make a warband (10 models) and then play in a series of games where you models gain skills, experience, new items, etc. (provided they survive the horrors of the city!). Frostgrave is set in a world where a huge, capital city suffered a magical cataclysm that plunged it into a thousand years of ice and snow. Now the magical winter is receding and wizards and their followers converge on the city to find lost magic and treasure.
Each player creates a Wizard, his (or her) apprentice, and up to 8 other followers. This is the warband that will be adventuring through the city. Players have their warbands face each other and also NPC monsters and villains as they attempt to find artifacts and other treasures.
So that’s the game overview in brief, now let’s look at the G&S Campaign and how it will work.
The Games and Stuff Campaign will follow all the standard rules for creating a warband, experience, etc. The only difference will be there will be over-arcing storyline that will be running in the campaign that will provide additional scenarios, items, etc. This storyline is called the Rise of the Demon Lords. Here is some background on this:
When Felstad fell, more than just ancient knowledge and treasure was lost. Powerful wards and guardians which stood for thousands of years also were destroyed on that fateful night. Magical beasts, terrible cursed artifacts, and much darker things all were loosed upon the unsuspecting world.
Deep beneath the towers and castles of the city, an ancient room resided, overseen by four of the city’s most powerful archmages. Inside this room was a massive box, bound in iron and runes from long ago. This was the Aether Chest. Within this chest resided a trio of the most powerful Abyssal Lords to ever plague the world, captured and bound in an eternal prison. The creatures were kept separate from one another by the box’s enchantments, trapping each inside a massive extra-dimensional space.
To keep their prison secure, the archmages placed five items in a pentacle around the chest, reinforcing its wards. These artifacts were of incredible power and, tied together with the binding spells of the chest, kept the Abyssals and even some of their minions trapped for milennia.
When the cataclysm hit Felstad, the Aether Chest held, but the five artifacts were scattered to winds, deposited throughout the city and the surrounding countryside. As the eternal winter settled over the city, they became another lost treasure, buried under the ice…
Now, a thousand years later, the ice recedes and the city prepares for adventurers and madmen to invade its boundaries. Most of these men and women come in search of treasures both mundane and magical, but others come for far darker purposes. The bonds on the Aether Chest have almost faded, the last remnants of magic falling to the Abyssals continued onslaught. If the five artifacts are not found and the wards restored, the creatures will break their ages old prison and bring darkness and horror to the world. Their terrible powers grow stronger each day, seeping beyond the confines of their jail. Whispered promises on the icy winds call to dark sorcerers and fell beasts, drawing them toward Felstad to aid in releasing the darkness. Some do this out of ancient loyalties to the Abyssals, others due it simply for the promise of power, while yet a few do it simply to watch the world burn. Whatever their reason, there is great evil growing amongst the ruins of Felstad, an eternal night threatening to fall upon the Frostgrave…
The Campaign will be kicking off the week of January 17th. There will be a specific day assigned for games, though games will be able to be played at any time and results reported. Full details on how all that will work and how the campaign will impact scenarios, etc. will be posted soon. For now, start getting those warbands painted and ready for the battlefield!
