Uncharted Realms: A Grateful Consulate

The metal-mage Tezzeret intended to make an example of Pia Nalaar by facing her in a public contest. But the Planeswalkers of the Gatewatch, drawn to Kaladesh by Tezzeret’s presence here, interrupted the contest and freed Pia Nalaar from Consulate custody. But Tezzeret’s schemes are never straightforward, and even the public spectacle had another purpose—as Dovin Baan is learning now.cardart_KLD_Dramatic-Reversal

A Brief Pro Tour Recap

A lot goes on during a pro tour. While the most exciting part may be seeing who will be champion that weekend and what deck they’re piloting to victory, there’s plenty of other new people stay tuned for. I’ll get to that, but for those interested, here’s the

Pro Tour Magic Origins Winning Deck List

Joel Larsson’s Red Aggro
Abbot-of-Keral-Keep
Creature (18)

4 Abbot of Keral Keep
3 Firedrinker Satyr
4 Lightning Berserker
4 Monastery Swiftspear
3 Zurgo Bellstriker

Sorcery (4)

4 Exquisite Firecraft

Instant (17)

1 Fiery Impulse
4 Lightning Strike
4 Searing Blood
4 Stoke the Flames
4 Wild Slash

Land (21)

21 Mountain

Sideboard (15)

2 Chandra, Pyromaster
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
3 Satyr Firedancer
2 Arc Lightning
4 Roast

This isn’t exactly what I was expecting from the Red Aggro deck of Magic Origins. I was expecting to see something aiming for a turn one Monastery Swiftspear or Akroan Crusader into a turn two Infectious Bloodlust or Call of the Full Moon. I am, however, not a pro. I suppose it would be very sad for your Infectious Bloodlust to be met with a Wild Slash melting your target before it resolves.

Interested in the other Top 8 Deck Lists? Sadly, I found the Blue/Red Thopters there and not in first place, but I’m holding out hope for the mechanical hummingbirds in a future first place spot.

Other News from the Pro Tour

The 2015 Pro Tour Hall of Fame Inductees

This year, in addition to votes from select commentators, judges, players, reporters, tournament officials, and Wizards of the Coast people, the overall Magic community got to cast a ballot. After the votes were counted, three were added to the Hall of Fame.

If you interested in reading profiles on these three player, you can find that here. Note that these profiles are mostly about their Magic careers. What’d you expect? I encourage you to try finding their MySpace pages if this isn’t sufficient for you, but nobody wants to go down that rabbit hole.

Mike Sigrist, Player of the Yearsigrist

Thopters! Heck yes! This is the gentleman who almost made it all the way this weekend, losing to Joel Larsson in the finals. He may get a rematch with Joel at the World Championship, where they’ll both be headed (Joel, as the winner of the Pro Tour, and Mike, as player of the year).

“It’s cool”
-Justin Cohen

I’m sure it is. Congratulations!

36 brave souls weathered the snow this past Saturday to come out to Games and Stuff’s first Preliminary Pro Tour Qualifier. Kaney Hayes won the day with Red/White Aggro and this is what he has to say about it.

“For this PPTQ I decided to play a R/W Aggro list based on Chris Vanmeter’s 60 card maindeck, but with some sideboard modifications based on my experiences with the deck.

The Plan:

R/W aggro is, as the name suggests, a deck in which the goal is to kill the opponent with efficient small or medium sized creatures forced through by removal. I think the two biggest draws towards the deck are Chained to the Rocks and Goblin Rabblemaster. Chained to the Rocks deals with most creatures in the format while not requiring a full turn investment. While decks like Abzan must spend their entire turn killing a creature, Chained allows one to answer a threat while deploying one of their own. Meanwhile, Goblin Rabblemaster represents a turn 3 play that will win the game if not dealt with. R/W also gained a huge boost with Outpost Siege. The Khans mode allows us to go to the long game with the more controlling and midrange decks in the format. Chandra proved too vulnerable to Hero’s Downfall or simply being attacked whereas an enchantment is much harder for decks relying on black removal to deal with. The deck does not have the broken draws that something like Green Devotion is capable of but it can punish any stumble and quickly close out games through Stormbreath Dragon and burn spells.

Sideboard Discussion:

An issue with the deck is that it is straightforward and thus opponents are able to bring in strong cards against the aggressive strategy employed by the maindeck. This causes most post-board games to slow down, as each player brings in more answers to the opponents plan while cutting some of the less effective cards. Rabblemaster gets much worse on the draw and comes out in many cases, primarily against other red decks. I found myself sideboarding more cards in against midrange and control decks than other aggro decks as the amount of removal shores up the aggro matchups even before sideboard. Post-board games present more of a challenge than pre-board and require practice with the deck to find a balance of threats and answers against the various other standard decks.

Potential Changes:

I was impressed by Wild Slash in the maindeck and think while I am not sure that 2/3 is the perfect balance between it and Lightning Strike, I am convinced playing it maindeck is correct. The exact distribution depends on how many 3 toughness creatures you expect to face. With the exception of Scouring Sands, I found myself sideboarding each card in in multiple matchups. Scouring Sands is probably too narrow to be worth a slot and I will probably replace it with something to help the control matchups, perhaps a Mastery of the Unseen or a 3 Siege. While the Mentor is somewhat awkward, it serves as a replacement threat when Rabblemaster comes out and works well with the additional spells that come in post-board. It may be worth replacing but for now it has proved effective.

Thank you for reading,

Kaney Hayes”

G&S WEEKLY NEWSLETTER: 9-24-14

newsletter headrHello all and welcome to another G&S Weekly Newsletter. It’s another busy week here at Games and Stuff so let’s tell you all about it!

First off, a huge thank you to all the Magic: The Gathering Community for the amazing Pre-Release over the weekend for Khans of Tarkir. We had a blast and that’s because of great players! We would also like to thank Starbucks for the coffee and Abram’s BBQ for the amazing food! Khans releases Friday and this set is proving to be very popular. If you want to get your hands on it as soon as possible, be here for our midnight release this Thor’s Day!

If you are an X-Wing fan (and come on, who isn’t) then you will be pleased to know that Rebel Aces is due in this week. This hotly sought after supplement should be here today or tomorrow so prepare for battle!

There are lots of things happening behind the scenes as well. Including a new website launch, loads of cool events for November and December, new product lines and much more!

Coming up this weekend we have a Khans of Tarkir Draft, a Malifaux Demo Day, Infinity Tournament, and more! Hope to see you here.

NEW BOARD GAMES ADDED TO THE LIBRARY – SPLENDOR, PHANTOMS VS PHANTOMS, JAMAICA
